Your eyes are an important part not only of your overall health but as well as on how you deal with your everyday life. The eyes are an important organ that helps all living things that have it perform well in their everyday routine. The world is a wonderful place to live in and what makes us appreciate its beauty more are the eyes that make us see it.

Maintaining healthy eyes is important to overall health. There are a lot of things that you can do to keep your eyes healthy to make you see through it best. Here are some simple tips for keeping your eyes healthy:

1. Visit your eye doctor.

Visiting your eye doctor is the best option that you can take if you want to make sure that your vision is fine and if your eyes are healthy. A comprehensive dilated eye exam can detect whether you have some vision problems that might need treatment. Some people also don’t realize that they can see better with the aid of contact lenses or glasses.

2. Eat right.

Eating fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens such as kale and spinach, carrots and other food rich in Vitamin A are good in keeping your eyes healthy. Foods rich in antioxidants like fruits and dark green vegetables also help reduce the risk of having cataracts.

3. Protect your eyes from radiation.

When going out on a hot day, don’t forget to wear protective eyeglass to shield your eyes from the radiation of the sun. Too much UV exposure increases your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration.

4. Give your eyes some rest.

Exposing your eyes to gadgets like phones or computers can stress the eyes and makes them tired. Focusing on one thing for a long time without blinking can also cause fatigue to your eyes and may result to eyestrain. Give your eyes some rest by shutting them for some minutes or by performing eye exercises like blinking or eye-rolling to reduce eyestrain.

5. Maintain your weight.

Being overweight increases your risk of developing systemic conditions that can lead to loss of vision such as diabetes.

6. Do not rub your eyes.

Rubbing can cause irritation and redness which can hurt your eyes. Using your hands to rub and scratch your eyes can permanently damage your cornea.

7. Exercise frequently.

Exercising frequently can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70 percent.

8. Do not smoke.

Smoking can increase the risk of-of developing eye problems such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, uveitis, optic nerve damage and other vision problem which also sometimes lead to blindness.

Following these tips is no guarantee of maintaining a perfect vision throughout your lifetime. However, keeping a healthy lifestyle and making time to see your doctor for a checkup will definitely decrease your risk of possible development of eye problems which with early detection can be treated and prevented from developing into a severe condition.
